How much do you charge for driving lessons?

One of the most common questions when looking for a Driving Instructor. Our prices can be found on the driving lesson prices page. You may be considering the Instructor who has quoted you the cheapest price - ask yourself (and them!) why they are cheaper; It may well be because they are a new Instructor who needs the work, or a trainee Instructor (PDI), or they have an older & less reliable car.

The purpose of a Driving Instructor is to teach, motivate, and structure an individual course to the pupil's needs; an Instructor should push you forwards with the learning process, not hold you back as some Instructors do. Would you rather do 30 hours with an Instructor at £21/hr (£630), or 50+ hours at £16/hr (£800) with an Instructor who is holding you back in order to maximise their takings? Most importantly, your driving lessons need to be enjoyable;

What is the difference between a Trainee Driving Instructor
and Fully Qualified Driving Instructor?

Trainee Instructors (PDI - Potential Driving Instructor) can be granted a temporary licence to teach while they finish the training for the test of their ability to instruct. This licence normally lasts 6 months. A fully qualified Driving Instructor (ADI - Approved Driving Instructor) has passed all the relevant tests. A PDI will have to display a pink certificate in the window while teaching, while an ADI has to show their green certificate. Without either of these, or one that has expired, a person can not legally take money for driving lessons. Below is an example of what they look like.

How long are the driving lessons?

That's entirely up to you. The advantage of a longer driving lesson, is that you can cover more, and go further. The shorter lessons work well if your time is limited. We recommend that most people have either 1 1/2 hours, or 2 hours.

How long will it take me to pass?

According to the DSA the national average is 46 hours with a Driving Instructor, and 22 hours of private practice. However, everyone is different, and the time taken will normally depend on your experience and confidence.

Hourly driving lessons, or an intensive course?

The advantage of an intensive course is that it's all done in a relatively short space of time, with the test at the end. However, if you have a full time job, or college to attend, you might find a few hours a week more suitable. Our contact details are on the Driving Instructor page, feel free to contact us with any queries.

What is the DSA's Code Of Conduct?

The DSA and the driving instruction industry place great emphasis on professional standards and business ethics. The code of practice has been agreed between DSA and the main bodies representing Driving Instructors; it is a framework within which all instructors should operate.
The code leaflet can be obtained from any theory test and driving test centres, phone 0115 9012500 or your Driving Instructor should be able to obtain a leaflet for you. It is hoped that ALL Driving Instructors will formally agree to adhere to the terms of the Code. The details can be found on the Driving Instructor's Code Of Conduct page. Our Driving Instructors agree to abide by this code.

What is the New Driver's Act?

Your driving licence is automatically revoked if you build up six or more penalty points within two years of passing your first driving test. This includes any penalty points you had before passing the test, which are still valid. You will have to reapply for your driving licence, and retake your theory and driving tests.

How does a Driving Instructor becomes fully qualified?

To become an ADI (Approved Driving Instructor), a person needs to:

  • Have held a full driving licence for 4 years.
  • Pass a much tougher theory test than the learner drivers.
  • Pass a very strict test of driving ability.
  • Pass a test of their ability to teach.
  • Maintain a high standard of tuition. This is regularly checked by a supervising examiner from the DSA.
  • Registered with the DSA.
  • Be checked be the Criminal Records Bureau.
  • Display their valid green badge in the windscreen while teaching driving lessons.

If you are considering training to become a driving instructor, one piece of advice is to research it well, don't listen too much to the large instructor training companies. 2 good forums to look up are www.adiforum.co.uk and www.2pass.co.uk. There are many more, and most give honest advice from other driving instructors, examiners and other people in the industry. This driving instructor's earning calculator might also help.
