Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat is the difference between a Trainee Driving Instructor How long are the driving lessons? How long will it take me to pass? Hourly lessons, or an intensive course? How a Driving Instructor becomes fully qualified?
When can I start to learn to drive? You can apply for your provisional driving licence when you are 16, and you can have your first driving lesson on your 17th birthday. What is the difference between a Trainee Driving Instructor Trainee Instructors (PDI - Potential Driving Instructor) can be granted a temporary licence to teach while they finish the training for the test of their ability to instruct. This licence normally lasts 6 months. A fully qualified Driving Instructor (ADI - Approved Driving Instructor) has passed all the relevant tests. A PDI will have to display a pink certificate in the window while teaching, while an ADI has to show their green certificate. Without either of these, or one that has expired, a person can not legally take money for driving lessons. Below is an example of what they look like.
How long are the driving lessons? That's entirely up to you. The advantage of a longer driving lesson, is that you can cover more, and go further. The shorter lessons work well if your time is limited. I recommend that most people have either 1 1/2 hour, or 2 hours. How long will it take me to pass? According to the DSA the national average is 46 hours with a Driving Instructor, and 22 hours of private practice. However, everyone is different, and the time taken will normally depend on your experience and confidence. Hourly driving lessons, or an intensive course? The advantage of an intensive course is that it's all done in a relatively short space of time, with the test at the end. However, if you have a full time job, or college to attend, you might find a few hours a week more suitable. My contact details are on the Driving Instructor page, feel free to contact me with any queries. Your driving licence is automatically revoked if you build up six or more penalty points within two years of passing your first driving test. This includes any penalty points you had before passing the test, which are still valid. You will have to reapply for your driving licence, and retake your theory and driving tests. How a Driving Instructor becomes fully qualified? To become an ADI (Approved Driving Instructor), a person needs to:
